Shaker of the Enfield, N.H. Shaker community, as well as a musician and poet. Composer of the popular Shaker song "Millenial Praise". More informatin about that particular song, the Enfield community, and Shaker music in general can be learned by contacting ethnomusicologist Roger Lee Hall, a scholar and performer of Shaker music.

About the Elder James Russell Music Book

Music book kept by James Russell of Enfield, N.H. The first 56 pages of the book contain a 12 section lesson on the principles of music. Pages 58-145 contain hymns and poems Russell wrote for the funerals of numerous Enfield and Canterbury, N.H. Shakers. The final hymn in the book, written in a different hand, is a funeral hymn for Russell. Also included in the book are two poems: one is a lengthy account about a trip to Lake Winnipesaukee, the other is titled, “A Farewell to Mt. Lebanon.”
