About Carlton and Maggie Bradford

Carlton (b. 1911) and Margaret (1928-2011) Bradford owned and operated the Kearsarge Bookshelf and Bradford Hallmark in New London, NH for 27 years. They began corresponding with Donald Hall when hosting a poetry reading for him in their store. Margaret died in June of 2011 aged 82. Over the years they collected correspondence and publicity related to the work of poets Donald Hall & Jane Kenyon.

About Donald Hall and Jane Kenyon

Donald Hall served as U.S. Poet Laureate from 2006-2007 and is the author of over fifty books, including 22 volumes of poetry, notably The One Day (1988), Without (1998), a book of poems written after the death of his wife Jane Kenyon, and his last book, The Back Chamber (2011). He is also the author of Ox-Cart Man (1979), a children’s book which won the Caldecott Medal for 1980, and a series of books about life at Eagle Pond Farm in Wilmot, N.H. Jane Kenyon was the author of four books of poetry during her lifetime – From Room To Room (1978), The Boat of Quiet Hours (1986), Let Evening Come (1990) and Constance (1993). She died from leukemia in 1995. A posthumous volume, Otherwise: New and Selected Poems, appeared in 1996, followed by Jane Kenyon: Collected Poems in 2005. Both Donald Hall‘s and Jane Kenyon‘s papers are held by Milne Special Collections.

About the Carlton and Maggie Bradford-Donald Hall-Jane Kenyon Papers

The collection consists primarily of written correspondence between Carlton and Margaret Bradford and Donald Hall and Jane Kenyon. Additionally, there are numerous newspaper clippings, collected by Carlton and Margaret Bradford, concerning the lives and work of Hall and Kenyon. In particular, there are published tributes to Kenyon following her early death in 1995, national and local reviews of Hall’s and Kenyon’s published poetry, and news of events being attended by or dedicated to Hall and Kenyon. There are also miscellaneous papers, including broadsides and cards containing the poems by Hall and Kenyon, and invitations for Carlton and Margaret Bradford to events hosted by or in honor of Hall and Kenyon. Finally, there are a small number of photographs – two of Donald Hall, and one of Carlton Bradford.
