Guide to the New England Center for Continuing Education, Ephemera Files, 1969-2010

Collection number: UA 4/4/1
Size: 3 boxes (1.0 cu.ft.)

About the New England Center for Continuing Education

The New England Center for Continuing Education was established in Durham, NH in 1966. Located on 10 acres, the hotel and conference center was a cooperative venture of the six New England land grant universities (New Hampshire, Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts-Amherst, Rhode Island and Vermont). Its mission was to support continuing education programs at the six universities, sponsor seminars and research on issues of regional importance, and serve as a conference site for all New England. Major funding for the New England Center was provided by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.

Designed by William Pereira, who built the Transamerica Pyramid in San Francisco, the New England Center also had a restaurant, café and bar. In 1990, the UNH Department of Hospitality Management and the New England Center entered into a partnership which gave students extensive internships and practical experience working in the on-campus Conference Center Facility. However, increased competition from other hotel/conference facilities in the Seacoast and the downturn in the economy in 2001 aggravated an already challenging financial situation. There were also no available funds for necessary capital repairs and upgrades. The New England Center closed its doors in July 2010.

About the New England Center for Continuing Education, Ephemera Files

The material in this collection was gathered by Cliff Hodgdon, the NEC Conference Service Workers Supervisor, while assisting with the packing of the NEC offices in preparation for its closing. It includes menus, guest information, advertisements, citations and award certificates, a booklet of memoirs written by NEC staff and a short tribute DVD created by Hodgdon.
