Stevens Family Papers, 1762-1928

Collection number: MC 122
Size: 6 boxes (2.00 cu.ft.)

About the Stevens Family

In 1757, the first Stevens (Joshua, 1737-1816) settled in Nottingham, New Hampshire and for over one-hundred and fifty years the family occupied the same land. Town and local histories provide little information about the lives of the first three generations of family members, but these records suggest that they were farmers. In 1827, Daniel Barber (b. 1803), a third generation Stevens, married Betsey M. Butler (d. 1900), daughter of Capt. John Butler and Sally Batchelder Butler, thereby linking two of Nottingham’s most prominent families.

About the Stevens Family Papers

The Stevens Family Papers primarily consist of correspondence, including letters written to Betsey M. Butler Stevens from her children and three sisters, as well as correspondence between the seven children of Daniel and Betsey Stevens. The collection also contains eighteenth and nineteenth-century school compositions and practice books done by various Stevens and Butler children, a journal kept by Amanda Stevens from 1885 to 1903, various family records, receipts and legal documents, account books, and over 150 photographs.
