About the Smith Family Ledgers
A collection of 3 ledgers from the Smith family of Center Harbor, New Hampshire. Ledger 1 has the name of David B. Smith on the inside cover. There are 310 pages that appear to be employment records of local women in the manufacture of stockings, both cotton and wool. There are directions that state "In seaming begin the seam at the toe and seam toward the heel on each side... Poor seaming not paid for at any price." Ledger 2 has 132 pages with the first 17 pages pasted with newsprint. The remaining pages are lists with names of local people, a list of their purchases, costs, repayments and in some cases repayment made in kind. Ledger 3 has the name of Mrs. Jane Smith on the inside page. This ledger has only several whole pages and few partial pages that relate to the settling of debts and employment records of local employees in the manufacture of stockings.
