About the David Watters Letters

8 pieces of correspondence (letters, and postcard-size notes) from Carolyn Chute and 1 postcard from Maxine Kumin. The Chute letters, 2 typed and the rest written in her distinctive hand, talk about the logistics of readings at the University of New Hampshire and are chatty. [Chute taught for one semester at UNH in 1988]. The 1992 note thanks Watters for his favorable comments about Letourneau’s Used Auto Parts, Chute’s second novel, which she prefers over her successful debut novel, The Beans of Egypt, Maine: “Beans, to me, seems like such a beginner’s book, and Letourneaus, to me, seemed more like a real book. It said things the way I meant to say them. It has broken my heart that Letourneaus has been so ignored while so much was made of Beans.” Kumin thanks Watters for his reading of her work in his essay “Build Soil” in Shaping the Land We Call New Hampshire.
