Celebrating 110 Years as a Federal Depository Library

Posted September 13, 2017

University of New Hampshire’s Dimond Library celebrates 110 years in the US Government Publishing Office’s (GPO’s) Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP). UNH became a US depository in 1907 due to its status as a land-grant institution. GPO has operated the FDLP since 1895, though the program's roots can be traced back to the act of Congress dated December 27, 1813 (3 Stat. 140), which stated that one copy of the journals and documents of the Senate and House must be sent to each university, college, and historical society in each state.

The FDLP ensures that the public has free access to Federal documents in approximately 1,150 participating libraries across the United States. These libraries, in partnership with GPO, work in support of Keeping America Informed. In 2015, Dimond Library became the first depository library in New Hampshire to receive a Depository Library Spotlight.

The UNH Library is proud to have served UNH and the broader community in providing access to tens of thousands of Congressional and federal agency publications. We also provide expert assistance in navigating digital copies of historical and current US government publications through sources such as govinfo, GPO’s Catalog of U.S. Government Publications, and the UNH library catalog. The UNH Library looks forward to continuing to serve our communities by providing access to and service for FDLP-supplied government resources, which are complemented by many commercial databases and websites.

To commemorate this anniversary, several exhibits are being planned to enhance awareness of the range of government publications available in our collection or online.

Government Information Displays

Throughout the fall semester we'll be displaying historical publications, posters, illustrated books, and more. Explore the main level (level 3) of Dimond Library or follow @unhlibrary on Twitter to see what we have.

Constitution Week

Coinciding with the opening of the lobby exhibit is Constitution Week (September 17-23, 2017), which will be the focus of our rotating display. We’ll have a colorful Constitution-related jigsaw puzzle available in the Addison Reading Room for people to work on and enjoy.
