Biological Sciences Branch Library
- Each student is hired to work 10 hours per week, and must be willing to work during weekends, nights, Reading Days, and Finals Week. After the training period, the students selected/assigned permanent schedule will be in affect for the remainder of the semester until the last day of classes. New sign-up schedules will be available for shifts during the Reading Days and Finals Week. Students can go home after their last final earlier rather than later in the week only if all evening/weekend shifts are covered. All students are required to help during this time.
- During the semester, training lasts about two weeks, 10 hours per week, during normal daytime business hours (M-F 8a-5p). (Students are paid during training.) After training is completed, the students regular schedule goes into affect. This is comprised of two solo shifts on week nights or weekends, however both cannot be 5p-8p shifts. The remainder of the 10 hours per week are scheduled during normal daytime business hours (see above). This allows for some contact with the supervisor during the week.
- Work duties are assigned by the supervisor. Everyone does not necessarily get assigned the same work, but there are duties which must performed during every shift.
- When students know in advance that they will be unable to work a scheduled solo shift (evening or weekend), it is their responsibility to find coverage from one on of the other students. This can either be as a shift swap or merely taking the hours. All students and staff will have a list of all workers, their phone numbers, and addresses. Notes can also be left in the timesheet binder. Students must be sure the supervisor knows who will be covering the shift. In the case of illness or emergency, the supervisor will assist in contacting other students to cover.
- Much of the library work requires great attention to detail. (It has been described as picky.) This includes computer work, and shelf-reading. If you cannot be careful, accurate, and focused, this position may not be for you.
- In general, library work is clerical and repetitive in nature. Students must deal effectively and courteously with the public. It is work that requires a physical effort, such as lifting, reaching, grasping, kneeling, climbing, bending, pushing, pulling, and shifting. It is NOT a desk job. There will be detailed tasks, and menial or no-brainer tasks. The duties are varied during the shift, but typically students are required to shelve, process, file, and provide desk services during most of their shift.
- Some jobs involve proofing work another student has done, such as filing or shelf-revising.
- There will be enough work to keep you busy during your entire shift. There will be no time for studying, and doing homework is not allowed during your shift.
