About the Works Project Administration (WPA)

The Works Projects Administration (WPA) was created under President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal program in 1935. It was designed to provide relief for the nation’s unemployed through public work programs and was responsible for employing an average of 2.1 million people a year from 1935 to 1941. The Historical Records Survey of New Hampshire, established in 1936, was one of these public works projects. The University of New Hampshire assumed control of the project in 1939, when state sponsorship became mandatory, and directed it until its termination in 1942.

About the WPA Historical Records Survey:

The Historical Records Survey consists primarily of inventory work sheets for town, city, county, and church archives. Some records have been copied. Also included are photographs, maps, pamphlets, newspaper clippings, and inventory work sheets for American imprints.

The records have been maintained in the order in which they were received, according to the contents list prepared by the WPA. For additional records created by the Historical Records Survey of New Hampshire, consult the following repositories:

  • Library of Congress – inventory and transcripts of county records (under keyword search, type “New Hampshire records”).
  • New Hampshire State Library – transcripts of cemetery inscriptions (1 cu.ft.)
  • Manchester City Library – American Imprints survey (3 cu.ft.)
