About Samuel Wilkinson
Samuel Wilkinson of Great Falls, N.H. (now Walpole) enlisted in Company F of the Fourth Regiment NH Volunteers on September 4, 1861 and mustered in as a Private on September 20. His regiment was initially assigned to the southern theatre – South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida – before returning north to fight at Petersburg, Richmond, and to participate in the retaking of Fort Sumter. He is listed as missing.

The diary was written in an unused ledger book and covers the two-year period from September 1861 to October 1863, and from January to April 1864.
