Correspondence and receipts, 1858-1869: Five receipts that document Alvan Tobey’s payment of local and federal taxes, six receipts from the Durham Post Office that record postage paid by Tobey for his numerous newspaper subscriptions, a telegram, and a letter to Tobey from Samuel G. Adams that describes the early history of the Congregational Church in Durham and provides biographical information about Reverend Hugh Adams (1676-1748) and Reverend John Adams (1725-1792).
