About Thomas J. McIntyre

In 1962 Thomas J. McIntyre became the first Democratic Senator from New Hampshire in thirty years. He was continuously re-elected to the Senate until his defeat in the 1978 elections.

McIntyre was born in Laconia, N.H. on February 20, 1915. He was educated at private and parochial schools in Laconia, Manlius Preparatory School, Dartmouth College, and Boston University Law School. In 1940 McIntyre was admitted to the New Hampshire Bar. He was a practicing attorney and then served in the army in World War II in the European Theatre, retiring with the rank of Major in 1946. McIntyre was mayor of Laconia from 1949 through 1951; Laconia City Solicitor, 1952-53; Director of the Laconia-Weirs Beach Chamber of Commerce, 1960-63; and Director of the Laconia Development Corporation in 1962.

McIntyre entered the national scene in the 1962 special election following the death of Republican Senator Styles Bridges.

In the Senate McIntyre served on the following committees: Armed Services Committee (chair of the Research and Development Subcommittee); Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee (chair of the Financial Institutions Subcommittee); Select Committee on Small Business (chair of the Subcommittee on Government Regulation).

He died in Palm Beach, Florida on August 8, 1992 and is buried in St. Lambert Cemetery in Laconia.

About the Thomas J. McIntyre Collection

The Thomas J. McIntyre papers cover McIntyre’s entire term of office in the Senate from 1962 through 1979. The papers consist mainly of legislative, political, and administrative files, copies of speeches, newspaper clippings, and lesser quantities of press releases, voting records, photographs, tape recordings, and miscellany. The papers are arranged in the order in which they were received. Additions, 1979-1990, concern The Fear Brokers (1979) and other writings.
