About Ted Sannella

Ted Sannella was born August 14, 1928. He graduated from Revere High School in Revere, MA in 1945 and took a B.S. degree in Biology and Chemistry from Tufts College (now Tufts University) in 1949. He then obtained partial credit towards an M.S. degree in Education at Boston University in 1950 and was certified to teach in the Boston School System that same year. He took a B.S. degree in Pharmacy from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy in 1954 and practised as a pharmacist for 35 years, retiring in 1989. He and his wife Jean moved from Massachusetts to Wiscasset, Maine in 1990.

Ted began teaching New England dancing as a professional caller in 1946. He sponsored and called a weekly dance series in Cambridge, MA from 1950 to 1971, a biweekly dance series for the Country Dance Society, Boston Centre, from 1975 to 1991 and a weekly summer dance series in Westport, MA from 1952 to 1990. He also called for a monthly dance series in Concord, MA from 1952 onwards and in No. Whitefield, ME from 1991.

He was a featured New England dance caller at many weekend and summer camps throughout the country for many years. These included the Maine Folk Dance Camp (10 times); Pinewoods English & American Week (5 times); Pinewoods American Music & Dance Week (twice); Augusta Heritage Dance Week in Elkins, WV (twice); Brasstown, NC Summer Dance Week (3 times) and Christmas week (twice); Berea, KY Christmas Week, and the Ralph Page Legacy Weekend (7 times), as well as a long list others.

Ted was a teacher of courses in Leadership at many of the above week-long camps and weekends. He called on tours of England (1982 and 1994), Denmark & Belgium (1990), the Netherlands, Denmark & Belgium (1992) and was a featured caller at dance camps in the latter two countries. He was the author of Balance and Swing (1982), a comprehensive collection of New England squares, contras and triplets, and Swing the Next, published in 1996 after his death.

Ted was an active member of the Executive Board of the New England Folk Festival Association (NEFFA) from 1947 until his death as well as caller and teacher at that organization’s annual weekend festival each year. He was also a former member of the Board of Directors of the Folk Arts Center of New England and of the National Council and of the Governing Board of the Country Dance & Song Society. A Past President of the New England Folk Festival Association and North of Boston Caller’s Association, he was the New England Dance Consultant for Boston Centre, Country Dance Society and an Honorary Life Member. As chairman of the Ralph Page Memorial Committee, a standing committee of the New England Folk Festival Association, he was responsible for coordinating the establishment of the Ralph Page library at the University of New Hampshire.

Ted was the possessor of one of the most extensive collections of dance books, periodicals, phonograph records and cassette tapes (pertaining to dance & dance music) in the United States and was widely known as a choreographer of many popular dances and originator of the triple formation. After Ralph Page’s death, he became dubbed “the Dean of New England Callers.”

About the Collection

Comprised of 3000 recordings, 500 dance books and periodicals, and over 50 boxes of personal papers, the Ted Sannella Collection is one of the most extensive archives of materials on dance and dance music in the United States and is a cornerstone of the University of New Hampshire’s Library of Traditional Music and Dance.

The papers include a large volume of correspondence documenting his involvement with NEFFA, CDSS and other groups, and his willingness to give editorial advice to other authors. They also contain the manuscripts of Swing The Next and Calling New England Traditional Squares.

Of particular use to callers is the comprehensive archive of dance lists Ted compiled documenting the specific dances he called at each dance, from his monthly Cambridge dance beginning in 1950 up until the last dances he called in 1995 at the Concord and North Whitefield dances. The lists indicate not only the type of dance called (e.g., square, contra, triplet), but also the tunes that were played for them. Hundreds of index cards of dance instructions, including Ted’s own originals, provide further riches for the caller.

As the companion CD to the CDSS publication of Ted’s Calling New England Traditional Squares attests, the collection is already proving to be a significant resource for the dance community. Produced by David Millstone from Ted’s archive of self-recorded tapes, the CD is intended to encourage callers hesitant about improvising breaks for square dances. It thus highlights the collection’s usefulness not only for the dance historian, but equally for the active caller.

For an index of Ted Sannella’s published dances, see David Smukler’s dance page.
