About the Stevens Family

In 1757, the first Stevens (Joshua, 1737-1816) settled in Nottingham, New Hampshire and for over one-hundred and fifty years the family occupied the same land. Town and local histories provide little information about the lives of the first three generations of family members, but these records suggest that they were farmers. In 1827, Daniel Barber (b. 1803), a third generation Stevens, married Betsey M. Butler (d. 1900), daughter of Capt. John Butler and Sally Batchelder Butler, thereby linking two of Nottingham’s most prominent families.
