About Joseph Smith
Merchant, Meredith and New Hampton, N.H.
About the Joseph Smith Ledger and Scrapbook
The ledger documents business transactions made at the Meredith store between 1822 and 1825. It appears that Smith ran a general store trading in hardware, rum, shoes, etc. The ledger was later used as a scrapbook, so that the first fifty pages are pasted over with newspaper clippings, business cards, and advertisements. Many of these cards and advertisements are from S.E. Young and Co., Jewelers, of Laconia, N.H. (the name E.C. Covell also appears on some of the cards) and J. L. Covell, “fashionable hatter” of New Bedford, MA and Jay Bridge, ME. There are also a few notices of masonic events from the Mt. Lebanon Lodge in Laconia, N.H. relating to members of the Covell family, all of which suggests that the scrapbook was kept not by Smith, but by one of the Covells.
