About the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) and Scotty Whitelaw

The Eastern College Athletic Conference was founded in 1938 and was an umbrella conference consisting of smaller conferences of college and university athletic programs. Among other services, the ECAC managed tournaments for its member conferences and schools, including the Division I basketball, ice hockey, and baseball tournaments, whose winners automatically qualified for their respective NCAA tournaments.

In his long career, 1960 to 1989, with the Eastern College Athletic Conference, Scotty Whitelaw worked with many sports, but his most significant contributions were to eastern college hockey. He helped to organize the National Ice Hockey Officials organization in 1956, he was the architect of the annual ECAC tournament, which began in 1962, and he was a tireless crusader for better rules, better officiating, better coaching, better championships – all with an eye on providing the best possible experience for the student athletes.

About the Scotty Whitelaw-Eastern College Athletic Conference Collection

Interim ECAC Commissioner Steve Bamford has agreed to designate the Holt Hockey Archive as the repository of historical materials for ECAC hockey, including media guides, committee minutes and correspondence, tournament programs, and record books. “We are pleased to secure a climate-controlled, professionally maintained repository for the historical materials we have been keeping in our attic,” said Bamford. “It makes great sense to name this collection after Scotty Whitelaw.” The collection consists of press releases, tournament programs, and media guides.

    I played on the 1974-75 Hamilton College team that upset Salem State and Merrimack on the way to the ECAC Div II championship game with Bowdoin, which we lost 6-4. Since we had traveled to eastern Mass and back twice in one week, the ECAC flew us from Utica to Portland, a gesture not frequently replicated for a D2 team. Would you happen to know the tournament seedings for 1975? Thank you in advance for any relevant information you can provide. Ted

    Hamilton College finished the regular season in third place, one place above Salem State.
