Guide to the Roche Family Papers, 1916-1946

Collection number: MC 176

Size: 1 box (0.33 cu.ft.)

About the Roche Family

The Roche family – Annie Roche, widow of David Roche (died Sept. 6, 1932), and mother of John Michael, Elizabeth (born ca. 1920, died July 1990), and David Roche (born ca. 1926) – lived at 89 Fourth Street in Manchester, New Hampshire’s west side. From July 1941 until March 1943, when he was discharged and awarded a disability pension for a duodenal ulcer, John served as a private in the U.S. Army. David served in the U.S. Navy.

About the Roche Family Papers

The Roche Family collection consists of 113 letters written during the years 1942-1946 and a small number of photographs. Over half of the letters (71) are to Elizabeth Roche (referred to variously as “Betty,” “Liz,” or Elizabeth), mainly from former high school friends serving in the Armed Forces, or from family relatives. Twenty-seven (27) of the letters are from David Roche to his mother, Annie. Mrs. Margaret Wagner, whose son Thomas, is one of the correspondents, also lived at 89 Fourth Street in the unit adjacent to the Roches.

Many of the letters, and especially those to Elizabeth Roche, bear a flavor probably typical of letters home from new recruits: they are breezy and nostalgic for the recent past, mentioning times and places shared in common, such as “the square,” a neighborhood in Manchester.
