About Robert Otis Clement

Robert Otis Clement, son of Otis David and Gladys Nixon Clement, was born in Nashua, New Hampshire on December 1, 1917. He graduated from Nashua High School in 1934, and from the University of New Hampshire in 1938. He joined the infantry of the United States Army in 1942. His brother, Lieutenant William Clement, and his sister, Lieutenant Shirley Clement, also joined the armed services. During his service at Fondouk Pass in the North African campaign in 1944, Clement was seriously wounded in the jaw and shoulder by an enemy bullet. At the time of the injury, he was a private with the intelligence section of the 3rd Battalion, 133rd Infantry, 34th Division. He received the Purple Heart medal for being wounded in action. After recovering, Clement returned to action during the Battle of the Bulge. Following the war, Clement attended the Episcopal Theological Seminary in Cambridge, Mass. and was ordained into the Episcopal priesthood at Saint Mary’s Church in Penacook, New Hampshire, in 1951. The Reverend Robert Clement died near his home in Portland, Maine on February 21, 1993.
