About the Physician’s Ledger

About the Physician’s Ledger

A very detailed ledger, itemizing each visit made and what was prescribed. Most of the accounts were with families living in Candia and Deerfield, but there were also some in the towns of Allenstown, Epsom, Chester, Goffstown, Raymond, and Pembroke. The vast majority of entries fall between the years 1799 and 1803, though there are a few later entries for Loudon (see pp.47 and 133 e.g.), dated 1835, that appear to be in the same hand. Although the identity of the ledger’s owner remains a mystery, there are a couple of likely candidates. The name of Luther Phillips appears frequently where penmanship is being practiced in the book, suggesting that it may have belonged to him. Dr. Samuel Foster, who lived in, first, Chester, and then Candia during this period, is another possibility. He died in 1820, which means that if the book were, indeed, his, it would have changed hands by the time the 1835 entries were made.
