About Nursing Education in New Hampshire
As the nineteenth century drew to a close, the needs of hospitals prompted the establishment of training schools for nurses and the germination of the concept of professional
nursing. The first such training school in New Hampshire was opened at the New Hampshire State Hospital in 1888.
As a result of these developments, nurses began to organize themselves for the improvement of patient care. The forerunner of the American Nurses Association was formed in 1896 and that of the National League for Nursing in 1893.
In New Hampshire, nurses who had graduated from the state’s training school programs were also feeling the need to organize, and in April 1906 fifty of them met in Concord to discuss the establishment of a permanent association. A month later, on May 28, 1906, at a second meeting held at the state hospital, the Graduate Nurses Association of New Hampshire was formed. It changed its name to the New Hampshire State Nurses Association in the 1940s. (For more information, see A Brief History of The New Hampshire Nurses Association, Box 12, folder 1)
About the Nursing Education in New Hampshire Collection
The Nursing Education in New Hampshire Collection includes materials relating to the New Hampshire State Hospital School of Nursing, the New Hampshire State Nurses’ Association, the Claremont General Hospital Alumnae Association, and the New England Council for Higher Education for Nurses (NECHEN). Minutes, yearbooks, course outlines, manuals, and class photographs make up the bulk of the collection. Of significant interest to the nursing historian,
the collection includes research materials and early drafts of a proposal for the analysis of the distribution of nursing personnel and services which culminated in a report on nursing distribution
practices in New England in 1975.
