About the New Hampshire Bible Society
Established on June 3, 1812, the New Hampshire Bible Society was created with the purpose of extensive distribution of the Bible. It is an ecumenical society whose founding members were both clergy and prominent laymen, including New Hampshire governors John Langdon, who served as the Society’s first president, and John T. Gilman. It was one of the earliest Bible Societies incorporated in the United States; its founding preceded the establishment of the American Bible Society by four years.
The New Hampshire Bible Society has worked since its inception to promote the widespread dissemination of the scriptures to residents of the state through free distribution among the poor and through the sale of scriptural resources at reduced prices. In 1959, the Society joined with another ecumenical organization, the New Hampshire Council of Churches, to share an Executive Secretary and administrative costs, an arrangement which continues to the present. Though they remain separate non-profit organizations, there has been some overlap in the ministries of the Bible Society and the Council of Churches.
The Bible Society continues to provide copies of the scripture to church organizations free of charge through grant programs, offers a selection of Bibles for sale through its office, and sponsors educational events related to Bible education, awareness, and its continued relevance in the 21st century.
