About Lawrence W. Henderson:
Lawrence Wallace Henderson was born in Yankton, South Dakota on February 6, 1921 and grew up in Tacoma, Washington. He graduated from the College of Puget Sound with a major in History and received a graduate degree in Theology from Yale Divinity School as well as a M.A. in Anthropology from Hartford Seminary, Hartford, CT. He then spent a career as a Minister of the United Church of Christ and as a missionary in Angola and Church leader. He was also a life-long member of the Fellowship of Reconciliation.
From 1945-47 Henderson served a church in Aberdeen, Washington before becoming a missionary in Angola, where he stayed from 1948 until 1969 with his wife, Muriel (”Ki”), and their children, two of whom were born in Angola. Before they arrived in Angola, the Hendersons studied Portuguese in Portugal in 1947-48. After a leave in 1969, Henderson applied for a re-entry visa for Angola, but was denied permission to return. This ended his official missionary career in Angola and he did not return to visit that country until after its independence in 1975, but it did not end his association with Angola or its people. His last visit to Angola was in 2001.
After leaving the mission field, Henderson worked at the United Church Board for World Ministries office in New York where he was Associate Secretary for Africa and later Secretary for Latin America. From 1977 to 1986 he was a pastor for churches in Leisure City and Sun City, Florida and he also published his first book on Angola. From 1986 to 1991 the Hendersons lived in Portugal; during this period he wrote another book on churches in Angola and taught at the Presbyterian Seminary in Lisbon. As one of his daughters, Nancy Henderson-James wrote in an obituary in 2003, “Angola always remained the focus of his life and he wrote three books on the church and history of colonial and post-independence Angola.” The three books were: Angola: Five Centuries of Conflict (Africa in the Modern World series: Ithaca & London: Cornell Univ.Press, 1979), which deals extensively with the brutality of Portuguese colonial policies and institutions; A Igreja Em Angola: Um Rio Com Varias Correntes (Lisbon: Ed.Alem-Mar, 1990) (English edition, The Church In Angola (Pilgrim Press, IL, 1992); and a biography of an Angolan Church leader, close associate and friend of the Hendersons, and church martyr, Jesse Chipenda, Development and the Church in Angola: Chipenda The Trailblazer (1999/2000).
Lawrence Henderson was also a scholar and teacher who had a broad and deep interest in African Studies generally and in Angola specifically. During one leave from the field in the 1950s, he earned a Master’s degree in Anthropology, as cited above. He kept in touch and consulted with scholars of Angola and Africa, and continued to publish and to participate in lectures and conferences.
Following his retirement and the publication of two more books on Angola, Henderson continued to maintain contacts with Angola and Angolans, former friends and colleagues. Lawrence Henderson died in Chapel Hill, North Carolina on July 31, 2003 aged 82.
About the Henderson collection:
The collection consists primarily of Lawrence Henderson’s newspaper clippings, articles, government documents on the then current situation in Angola, research notes, papers, and manuscripts for the books and articles Henderson wrote on Angola. The collection also contains church papers, sermons, and documents of the various church groups that Henderson was involved with. The personal papers all date from after Henderson’s stint in Angola as a missionary (1947-1969).
