About the Isaac Merrill Account Books

In the earlier of the two books (1823-1830), Merrill records money he received for teaching school in Amesbury, MA District #4 and for supplying beef and mutton all over Essex County. Beginning in 1826, the records shift to Dover, NH where Merrill boarded with and worked for butcher Benjamin Wiggin. One entry records the purchase of a breast pin for 75 cents and gold earrings for $2.00 at just about the time Merrill married his wife Hannah Lord in South Berwick, Maine. The book is in very poor condition.

The larger, second book (1833-1848) documents Merrill’s growing success as a merchant and the many accounts listed include typical names found in the Rochester, Dover, Alton, Strafford, and Farmington area in the first half of the 19th century.
