About Hockey East
Hockey East is a collegiate hockey league that was founded in 1983 by five institutions: Boston College, Boston University, the University of Maine, the University of New Hampshire and Providence College. Since then the league has expanded to include nine teams and is considered among the finest collegiate hockey conferences in the United Sates. In the first ten years of the conference’s existence, Hockey East schools won the NCAA Division I Ice Hockey Championship four times, and six times during the same period a Hockey East athlete won the Hobey Baker Award.
About the Hockey East Collection
This collection came from two sources. Part is from a donation made by Hockey East Commissioner Joe Bertagna. The remainder is from the records of the University of New Hampshire hockey program. It consists primarily of material generated by the league. The first part is made up of minutes detailing league meetings from 1984-1992. As the league grew, the minutes became more detailed and included sub-committees covering areas such as marketing and finance. Correspondence sent from the league to participating institutions makes up the next part of the collection. League directives and manuals governing the annual conference are also part of the collection, as are weekly press releases from the league office, annual media guides and yearbooks, and a poster.
