About Fred S. Keller
Fred Simmons Keller was born January 2, 1899 in Rural Grove, New York, the son of Vrooman B. and Minnie Simmons Keller. After having first worked as a messenger and telegrapher for Western Union, he graduated from Goddard Seminary in 1919 and then joined the Army, where he attained the rank of sergeant. After initially failing to obtain a degree from Tufts in 1924 (because of loss of credits through absences from Chapel and a failure to satisfy the physical education requirements), he worked for a year at the Andover Press, married Connie Ricketts, then returned to Tufts to complete his degree. In 1926, he began graduate work at Harvard University (where B.F. Skinner was one of his classmates) and continued part-time teaching under Prof. Robert Givler, receiving his Ph.D. in 1931.
After Harvard, Keller obtained a teaching position at Colgate University, where he stayed for seven years. In 1932 he divorced, but married again in 1936 to Frances Scholl, with whom he spent the rest of his life. In 1938 he moved to Columbia University, where he taught for 26 years until in 1964 he was given Professor Emeritus status. During this time, he and Frances had two children, Anne and John.
While at Columbia, Keller directed an Air Force project on communications. In 1948 President Truman awarded him a Certificate of Merit for his research in radio operator and selective training, and for his development of “Code Voice,” a new technique for teaching Morse Code to military personnel, adopted officially by the U.S. Army Signal Corps in 1943.
In 1961, on a sabbatical as a Fulbright Scholar, Keller spent a year at the University of São Paulo in Brazil. After retiring from Columbia in 1964 he returned to Brazil, this time to the University of Brasilia, where he helped found the psychology department and developed, with Dr. J. Gilmour Sherman, and two Brazilian psychologists, Carolina Bori and Rodolpho Azzi, the Personalized System of Instruction (PSI), sometimes called the Keller Plan. This was an individually paced, mastery-oriented teaching method that has had a significant impact on college-level science education. Students received a printed study guide for the first unit of the course and could work anywhere – including the classroom – to achieve the objectives it outlined.
From 1964 to 1967 Keller worked on this method at Arizona State University. From 1968 to 1973 he was a visiting professor at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, with a couple of what he called “side trips” to Texas Christian University and to Colorado State for short appointments. From 1974 to 1976 he was at the Center for Personalized Instruction at Georgetown University, after which he retired to Aiken, South Carolina. In 1980 he moved to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to become an adjunct research professor of psychology, pursuing his interest in educational reform and systems of instruction.
Keller published in scholarly journals throughout his career and was the author of numerous books. In 1972 he appeared in a movie with B.F. Skinner called “Together.” He traveled extensively, delivering speeches and receiving numerous honorary awards, including the Distinguished Teaching Award from the American Psychological Foundation in 1970, an Honorary Doctorate of Science from Long Island University in 1972, and the Behavioral Scientist’s medal from the Institute for Behavioral Research in 1974.
Fred Keller died February 2, 1996 at his home in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
The above biographical information is drawn from a number of sources, including Keller’s obituary and two letters. One, written in 1934 to his grandmother, documents his early academic career, while the other, written in 1989 to Russell “Bud” Carpenter, a Tufts classmate, provides an overview of his career.
For more information about Fred Keller and his significance, see Michael J. Root’s article at American National Biography Online, Murray Sidman’s tribute and João Claudio Todorov’s account of Keller’s role in the development of psychology in Brazil. For Fred Keller’s own account of his life and career, important psychologists he knew and the area of behavioral psychology, see the videorecording Fred Keller: Did you know Aristotle? by Bob & Marian Bailey.
About the Fred S. Keller collection
The Fred Simmons Keller Papers contain correspondence, course notes, speeches (some written in Portuguese), and unpublished papers, mostly concerning educational reform. The correspondence is primarily of a professional nature, much of it to colleagues in the field at other educational institutions. Keller also wrote numerous letters of recommendation. There is a section of correspondence and speeches from Brazil, some of which are written in Portuguese. Also included are several of his speeches and unpublished papers, mostly concerning educational reform. The final box consists of a Brazilian newspaper and signed posters to the Kellers that display dates and times of two psychology conferences in Brazil.
