The map illustrates various features of Durham at the beginning of the 19th century:

  • red spot on the map indicates the location of most shipbuilding activities,
  • brown lines indicate some of the major roads,
  • blue areas indicate water (i.e. rivers, marshes, and the bay area),
  • yellow lines indicate the boundary of the town as of 1805.
