About Edwin Jay Roberts
Edwin Jay Roberts was born in Gilford, New Hampshire on February 2, 1885. He was the son of Ada F. and John L. Roberts (1858- 1918). His father was a farmer who made extra money by running a milk route. He later began a successful business selling wood, coal, ice, cement, and other supplies, which caused the family to move into Laconia in 1890.
Edwin Jay received his early schooling at home and then attended public high school in Laconia (Academy Street), where he graduated with honors in 1902. He entered New Hampshire College in 1902 and after four years graduated with a degree in chemistry. He then attended Yale University for graduate work on rare earths. During a year off from study due to diphtheria, Roberts married his hometown sweetheart, Grace L. Moore (d. August 22, 1949) on October 6, 1909. He returned to Yale in 1910, finished his dissertation on cerium earths, and received his PhD. in 1911.
He initially took a job as a chemistry professor at Colby College in Waterville, Maine – a position he held for 3 years. In 1914 Roberts moved with his family to Brooklyn, NY, and he took a professorship at the Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute, where he taught until his father’s death in 1918. Circumstances required that he return to Laconia to help out with the family business. He never returned to teaching, but instead stayed in Laconia and ran a fuel business until his retirement in 1945.
During his years in Laconia, Edwin Jay Roberts was an active Free-Mason, a charter member of the Kiwanis Club, and a long- standing member of the Laconia Congregational Church. He died on January 11, 1968, 9 days after his 83rd birthday.
About the Edwin Jay Roberts Negatives
John E. Roberts, the son of Edwin Jay Roberts, gave the Special Collections Department his father’s negatives and accompanying logbooks on January 10, 1995.
The collection consists of photographic negatives made between 1912 and 1960 by Edwin Jay Roberts. Roberts developed his own photographs and methodically recorded information about each image in his logbooks. The logbooks date each photograph and the circumstances of its creation (light conditions, filters used, shutter speed, exposure, and developing methods). UNH now maintains 727 of Roberts’ negatives, including 617 black-and- white gelatin dry-plate glass negatives and 110 black-and-white cellulose acetate negatives. Some of the original 1400 negatives were destroyed by Edwin Jay Roberts because he considered them substandard. Other negatives (those taken while Roberts taught at Colby and lived in Waterville, Maine) were given to Colby College by John E. Roberts.
Roberts photographed the world around him, and therefore his collection contains many images of his family and scenes around Laconia, NH and Lake Winnipesaukee. However, the collection also contains many images of rural New Hampshire, the University of New Hampshire, New York City – where Roberts taught for several years – as well as images of both Maine and Massachusetts during family vacations. There are a number of domestic/interior images (112) as well as several beautiful examples of nature photography.
