About James W. Carr
James W. Carr was a captain in C Company of the Second Regiment of the New Hampshire Volunteers during the Civil War. He would become a lieutenant colonel before his discharge on June 21, 1864. Born in Poplin (Fremont), New Hampshire in 1825, Carr would later move to Illinois and Michigan. He returned to New Hampshire in 1861 to enlist in the New Hampshire Volunteers. After the war he became a successful lumber dealer. He died in Grand Rapids, Michigan on July 5th, 1875.

The diary documents Carr’s experiences as a captain during the Civil War. He includes entries about his encounter with the Merrimack, Lincoln’s visit to his camp, the Battle of Yorktown, the Battle of Seven Pines and Fair Oaks, the Second Battle of Bull Run, and the Battle of Fredericksburg.
