About Alice E. Cosgrove
Alice Ericson Cosgrove was born in Concord, N.H. on February 16, 1909. Encouraged by her father, she pursued her child- hood interest in art and in 1925 enrolled in the Museum of Fine Arts School in Boston. She finished her studies in 1929 and shortly thereafter married Roland Cosgrove, also an artist, returning to Concord in the early 1930s with her daughter. She found steady employment with the Works Progress Administration Federal Art Project in 1935 (a national program for unemployed artists during the Depression). During World War II Cosgrove drafted precision dials at the Hoyt Electrical Instrumental Works, and continued painting in her spare time. In 1946 she began working for the Planning and Development Commission of New Hampshire, designing and producing promotional artwork for the state until her retirement in 1971. Among her many projects were geological maps, posters, and covers for state publications. She created the figure of “Chippa Granite” to promote tourism and agriculture in New Hampshire and the New Hampshire Marine Memorial on Hampton Beach. She died on December 7, 1971.

I worked for Temple Mtn Ski area. During one of the ski area’s turbulent attempts at to stay afloat in business I found a poster we were going to throw away. The poster said “Ski New Hampshire” across the top and had a cheery freckle faced boy on old wooden skis. Needless to say I instantly liked the poster and rescued it from the trash. It was in remerkable condition for it’s age( says issued 1954 at the bottom A. Cosgrove) not sure when it was actually printed. I had it framed years ago and is a happy reminder for me of one of my first jobs and an old skiing tradition here in NH.
