What is Instant Messaging?
Instant Messaging, or IM, is a method of communicating in real time with others over the internet via a computer or a web-enabled device (cell phone, PDA, etc.). The tools for IM are free; you just need a network connection, IM software, and a screen name (see 'No IM Software?' below).
How to IM us
Simply send a message, or add us to your buddy list, to any of the four screen names.
No IM Software?
You can download software and sign up for an account and get more information from the following IM service websites:
Or, if you already have an account, you can use Meebo to IM from any web browser. (Great if you use multiple IM services.) Alternately:
IM FAQs
- Who staffs the service?
The reference librarians at Dimond Library staff the IM service. They are also available to answer your questions by email, phone, or in person.
- Will a reference librarian answer immediately or will I have to wait?
Patrons visiting the library in person will have priority over IMs. We will answer your question as soon as we are able, on a first-come, first-served basis. If you aren't receiving an answer, you may call us at 603 862-1544 or email us.
- What kinds of questions may I ask?
Short, factual research questions or questions about library policies, procedures and collections are all ideally suited to chat reference. Some examples of questions might be:
- Do you have a biography of Bill Gates? [Yes.]
- Who was the 14th president of the United States? [Franklin Pierce of NH]
- What is the capital of Ghana? [Accra]
- How many books may I sign out of the library at one time? [Unlimited]
- What if I have a more complicated research question?
We will try to answer your question as completely as possible. If it is complicated or time-consuming, we may ask you to come into the library or schedule a consultation with a reference librarian, so that we may give you the help you need with your research.
