Dean's Office

Duties include clerical work, answering the phone, forwarding phone calls, taking messages, sorting mail, delivering office supplies, and typing. You may be asked to deliver paperwork to departments on campus and complete small projects for other departments in the library.

Applicants should have good computer and customer service skills, the ability to deal with both the general public and university employees and the ability to handle several projects at once.

This position does not require any weekend or evening hours but lunch coverage (12:00-2:00 or 11:00-1:00) 5 days a week is preferred.


The circulation unit is responsible for staffing the circulation desk and the multimedia center in Dimond Library. It is the largest employer within the Library, employing approximately 35 student assistants.

Students will work 10-12 hours a week, including one night shift and one weekend shift.

Billing Assistant

The billing assistant, along with regular Circulation duties, will work with spreadsheets, filing, ready deposits, preparing paperwork for keying, database updating, mailings, and other tasks as assigned. They must be detail oriented, able to follow instructions, and maintain confidentiality. Inquisitive minds are welcomed! Accounting or Finance majors preferred. While the student’s Circulation schedule will include evenings and weekends, billing duties are scheduled between 8am and 4pm, Tuesday through Friday.

Collection Management

Student workers in Collection Management work at least 10 hours per week between 8am-4:30pm, Monday through Friday.

Main duties include (but are not limited to) daily support of the library's mail services (incoming and outgoing), working in the library stacks (shelving books, moving materials, etc.), performing searches in library-related software, and organizing data in Microsoft Excel. Other duties include processing gifts, conducting bibliographic research, searching for misplaced materials, bindery prep operations of the department and unpacking/examining incoming books.

Student workers must be conscientious and self-starting, with good and consistent attention to detail. Students should be comfortable with computers (particularly search engines and spreadsheets), able to lift 25-50 pound boxes, maneuver fully loaded book trucks, and perform tasks that involve lifting, reaching, grasping, stepping up and down, and kneeling. While there is little direct interaction with the public in our office, students will interact quite a bit with other library units and university faculty. Customer service skills are essential for assisting patrons in the stacks.

Engineering, Physics, and Chemistry Branch Libraries

The Engineering and Physical Sciences Branch Libraries are used primarily for research in the fields of physics, chemistry, engineering, mathematics, and computer science. Duties include shelving, checking books in or out, shelf reading, shifting, general upkeep of the libraries, special projects, interlibrary courier service, reference work, and basic clerical duties such as word processing and answering phones.

After the two-week paid training period, students will work between 10-12 hours a week, working the same schedule each week. Students will work during the reading days, and during finals week. The majority of shifts are Mon-Fri 8am-5pm, along with other shifts from 5pm-11pm during the week, as well as some weekends.

Government Information

Students will work roughly 10 hours a week. Shifts fall between 8am-4:30pm, M-F. Duties include receiving, processing and shelving books, journals and maps, shelf reading, shifting materials, searching, general upkeep, and special projects.

Interlibrary Loan

Interlibrary loan students are required to work several weekday mornings and/or afternoons, and usually work a total of 10 hours per week.

Duties include photocopying, computer work, and rounding up library requests both in Dimond Library and at the branch libraries. Student workers in interlibrary loan are not required to work nights or weekends.

Library Information Technology

Web Assistant

The web assistant is responsible for helping to maintain the library web site. They perform tasks such as checking for broken links, creating promotional images, and writing content in HTML. They may also perform other work for Library IT such as hardware inventories. Additional duties are assigned depending on skill set and interest.

Ideal candidates have experience with Windows, Microsoft Office (particularly Excel and Word), basic HTML and CSS, familiarity with Photoshop, and good written communication skills. Available hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm for 10 hours/week.

Library Storage Building

The Library Storage Building (LSB) is located at 5 Leavitt Lane near the West Edge parking lot. Students must be able to work well independently for 2-3 hours at a time, be comfortable with computers, able to lift 25-40 pound boxes, maneuver fully loaded book trucks, and perform a variety of miscellaneous tasks that include lifting, reaching, grasping, stepping up and down, and kneeling.

Duties include stacks work, such as shelving or shelf-reading, scanning journal articles and documents for email delivery, assisting with inventory projects, searching for lost items, and sometimes helping with the inter-branch deliveries and other projects.

Students are expected to work 10-12 hours a week, including stacks work in Dimond Library as well as shifts at the Library Storage Building. Some shifts may be worked entirely at the LSB. Transportation is available through the UNH Campus Connector.

Defensive driving is a plus, but not a requirement, for this position.


The reference unit hires 3 or 4 students per year. They are provided with intensive training in library resources.

Student reference aides work at the reference desk in Dimond Library with reference librarians, answering patron questions, providing assistance with electronic resources, and referring patrons to appropriate sources. They also pick up and shelve materials, file loose-leaf materials, and troubleshoot computers and printers.

Because it is a public service desk and is staffed 7 days a week, for 13 1/2 hours per day most days, students will be asked to take night and weekend duty shifts, in addition to daytime hours. On some of these shifts, the student, once trained, will be the only person staffing the reference desk.

Special Collections & Archives

Student assistants are required to work 10 to 15 hours a week during the hours of 9am to 5pm, Monday through Friday. Saturday hours are available but not required.

Student assistants are responsible for processing collections. Processing includes such activities as boxing folders, pulling staples, organizing files, and writing finding aids. Other job duties include paging materials, assisting in desk coverage, fulfilling photocopy orders, answering telephones, re-shelving materials, stack shifting, assisting in department events, and indexing newspapers.

Technical Services

Technical Services student assistants are responsible for processing material so that they can be made available for the public. This may include attaching spine labels, property stamps, and gift plates among other things.

Technical Services assistants may also work on computer based projects working with spreadsheets and other programs as needed. Available hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm.
