About the Rebecca Peabody letter
Letter to Mr. Horace Chase, Judge of Probates, Hopkinton NH, May 1, 1848 in which
Rebecca details her desperate plight. Her husband, who has recently left her -
though whether she means that he died or that he abandoned her is unclear - was in
debt to a Mr. Pike by having signed a promissory note with another man. As a result,
she is about to be put out of house and home with six "small ones" to care for and
no means of doing so. She seeks help from the judge.
