Courtyard Reading Room, Level 5, Dimond Library

The UNH Library invites you to attend a lecture about data literacy with Jake Carlson, the Research Data Services Manager at the University of Michigan Library.

This program is free and open to the UNH community. Light refreshments will be served, and the event includes an opportunity for questions from the audience.

Presentation Abstract

Researchers are under increasing pressure to manage, organize, describe and document their data in ways that enable others to discover, understand, and reuse their work. Increasingly, academic libraries are applying their knowledge and skills towards developing services and support for researchers seeking to do more with their data.

In his talk, Carlson will focus on a particular aspect of data services provided by libraries: educational programming for students to prepare them to manage and curate the research data they generate.

Speaker Bio

Jake Carlson is a primary architect of the Data Curation Profiles Toolkit developed by Purdue and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and the PI of the Data Information Literacy project.

Carlson is also a co-editor, with Lisa Johnston, of the book Data information Literacy: Librarians, Data and the Education of a New Generation of Researchers, published in 2015 by the Purdue University Press.

Look around Dimond Library in the next week and you'll see some new art. Students in Sachiko Akiyama's class, Installation: Sculpture in Context, have created mini installations to explore how cities are defined.

The installations in the library and around campus are a response to the book, Invisible Cities, by Italo Calvino, a narrative which explores how cities are defined. Inspired by this definition of place, the art installations aim to create places where they did not exist before.

There will be six pieces in the library between February 25th and March 4th — see if you can find them all!

The Library wants to improve the usability of our space and we need participants to help us figure out how. The usability study will take approximately one hour in Dimond Library.

For your hour of participation, you will receive a $15 Dining Services card, good at any Dining location on campus, or a USB flash drive.

Please note:
Current or former UNH library employees will not be eligible for the purposes of this study.
Participants will be asked to wear a GoPro while carrying out tasks during the study.

If you’re interested in helping us with our study, please contact Jenna Riley for more information.
