Government Information presents our latest featured resource from the NOAA Hurricane Central 2012. This resource features satellite and radar of current storms, archived data of past storms, and educational resources about hurricanes.
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is a part of the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) located at Florida International University in Miami, Florida. Their mission is to save lives by issuing the best watches, warnings, forecasts, and analyses of hazardous tropical weather.

In the past years, the UNH library acquisition budget increases have not kept up with inflation. In order to cover inflationary increases and balance the budget for FY 13, we need to make cuts to our journal subscriptions.
During the summer we worked with academic departments to identify titles for cancellation. The selections were made by looking at cost and usage data with a goal of keeping as much valued content available as possible and minimizing negative impact on our users, while still achieving our budget reduction targets.

We present two new databases:
American Men and Women of Science, 22nd ed. (2005), is a premier biographical reference on North American scientists.
Gale Literature Resource Center is built on three author databases: Contemporary Authors Online, offering biographical coverage of more than 130,000 writers; Contemporary Literary Criticism Select, featuring entries on all authors appearing in CLC since vol. 95 of the print series and complete profiles of 266 most studied authors from editions prior to vol. 95; and Dictionary of Literary Biography Online, containing more than 13,000 biocritical essays on authors and their works written by academic scholars.

Using library resources from home just got easier!
Starting Wednesday, August 22, the UNH Library will use the University’s LDAP directory for remote access to its electronic resources. This means you will no longer need to log in to Blackboard to access our electronic resources from off-campus.
Instead, simply navigate to the resource you want on the Library web site. You will then be asked for your UNH IT ID username and password. (This is the same username and password as Blackboard.) Once verified, you will be forwarded on to your resource directly.
All of which means fewer clicks and more efficient research from home, coffee shop, or wherever you are.
If you do log in via Blackboard, please be aware that you will still need to enter your UNH IT ID username and password a second time.

The UNH Alumni Association has announced that alumni now have access to the online research database EBSCOhost. For more, see the Alumni Association site.
Alums will need to register at the UNH Alumni web site. Verification typically takes a day. The database is also accessed from the Alumni web site.
UNH alumni are also entitled to a UNH library borrowing card. Just bring a photo ID and something with your current address, like a license or bill, to the Circulation Desk in Dimond Library or the UNH Manchester Library.

The Library has a new trial for Scopus which runs for the month of August. We are considering Scopus as a possible replacement for Web of Science.
We will also be hosting a tutorial/Q&A session with Elsevier halfway through the trial. If you would like to attend this session or have questions or comments, please contact our electronic resources librarian.
Update: The demonstration of Scopus and Q&A session will be held Friday, August 17th at 1pm in Dimond Library Room 343.

Government Information in the UNH Library presents our latest featured resource from the National Park Service on the Cape Cod National Seashore. This resource features sections on history, culture, photo galleries, and an area for teachers.
The site includes information on their residency programs for artists, the archaeology of Cape Cod, lesson plans, a reading list, and information about overnight educational group opportunities.
Henry David Thoreau knew Cape Cod well, once writing that "A man may stand there and put all America behind him." Today, part of the Cape has been designated Cape Cod National Seashore. Appropriately enough, the legislation to create this remarkable site was signed into law by President John F. Kennedy, who also knew and loved the area.

The Library of Congress is beginning its "Celebration of the Book" with an exhibition, "Books That Shaped America". The exhibition is part of a larger series of events that explore the important and varied ways that books influence our lives.
The Library of Congress has selected 88 books that shaped America, all by American authors. The first was published in 1751, and the most recent in 2002. Each author is represented only once, with one exception: Benjamin Franklin, who landed three books. The list includes poetry, novels, nonfiction, plays, a polemic, books of science and grammar, cookbooks, and children’s books.

Government information presents its latest featured resources, the newly redesigned site for the National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC) at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
The site includes underwater dive animations, an in-depth look at paleoclimatology, and information on tsunamis and other mega-events. Resources are arranged alphabetically and range from "A Library of Mud: NPR Science Friday Video" to "Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Online Expeditions."
