Opportunity, Vision, Change—Notable Government Documents 2005

From the May 15, 2006 issue:

Despite disaster responses of a seldom seen magnitude, a checkered record of voter approval and rejection of library funding initiatives, and the reauthorization of the USA PATRIOT Act, libraries continue to make information, including government documents, available to users through new and traditional services. In 2005, government at every level continued to tackle issues impacting their ability to deliver information. Libraries followed suit through their efforts to make information in all formats available for users both now and in the future.

The program, a partnership between National Video Resources (NVR) and the American Library Association (ALA), has included the UNH among the 43 libraries as pilot sites for the documentary film viewing and discussions series, “Looking At: Jazz, America’s Art Form.” This program has the potential to integrate with NH Library of Traditional Jazz, Traditional Jazz Series, and the concerts and lectures sponsored by the Seacoast Jazz Society.

From the program’s press release:

“Looking At: Jazz” explores the history of jazz music, an art form that evolved in the 20th century to occupy a unique place in American cultural history. Themes for the six programs in the series are: New Orleans: The Birthplace of Jazz; The Jazz Age and the 1920s; The Women of Jazz; The Jazz Swing Era; Jazz Innovators: From Bebop, to Hard Bop, to Cool and More; Latin Jazz.

From the Library of Congress

Librarian of Congress James H. Billington has announced the appointment of Donald Hall to be the Library’s 14th Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry.

Hall will take up his duties in the fall, opening the Library’s annual literary series in October with a reading of his work. He will also be a featured speaker at the Library of Congress National Book Festival poetry pavilion on Saturday, Sept. 30, on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.
