The UNH Digital Collection is featured in the Scout Report from August 14, 2009:

Overseen by the University of New Hampshire Digital Library Committee, the Digital Collections Initiative seeks to document the unique holdings of the University of New Hampshire Library. The materials in these collections deal with a wide range of subjects, including geology, early journalism in the Granite State, literature, and official records of the University.

The Scout Report highlights, to a national audience, the best of the best websites. It is produced by the Internet Scout Project, which since 1994 “has focused on research and development projects that provide better tools and services for finding, filtering and delivering online information and metadata.”

When you publish, are you signing away your rights to use your own work? What happens to your data when your research project is finished? How does the “Harvard mandate” really work? What is an institutional repository and what kinds of things should it contain? What are some of the new models for publishing your research? What exactly does “open access” mean and why should you care?

These and many other questions were addressed April 8th at the Open Access Symposium when invited speakers from Harvard University, Boston University, and University of Massachusetts – Amherst discussed issues surrounding open access and the changing scholarly communication landscape. This event was co-sponsored by the University Library and the Faculty Senate Library Committee.

Video recordings of this event, along with speakers’ slides, are now available.

The Leander Harris Letter Collection consists of personal letters, mainly between Leander and his wife Emily, from the Civil War years 1861-1865. They contain details of events that took place during his military service, carry news of family and friends, describe the weharriseather and places, and include personal notes and political opinions.

Harris served as a private with the Fourth New Hampshire Volunteer Infantry Regiment at Manchester and was present at the capture of Hilton Head. He also served as an aid at a military base hospital and as a mail messenger. This collection of letters affords a unique view into the life of a civil war veteran and his family.

The letters are part of the library’s Milne Special Collections and Archives. They have been digitized and transcribed by the Digital Unit and are now available online in both image and searchable full-text format.
