About Stark Family
The Starks of Suncook and Pembroke, NH were the descendents of Revolutionary War Major-General John Stark. The family appears to have engaged primarily in agricultural activities. However, sometime after 1810, Major Caleb Stark and his son Henry purchased the Pembroke Cotton and Wooolen Factory, which they operated until 1830. A few years before selling the factory, the Starks began producing silk on Caleb’s land in Dunbarton, NH. They planted hundreds of mulberry trees and raised thousands of silk worms, but the project, like other attempts at silk production in New Hampshire, was not lucrative enough to be successful.
About the Stark Family Papers
The Stark Family Collection primarily contains information regarding silk production in New Hampshire, including correspondence, a journal, and a deed. Also included in the collection is a copy of the song Col. Philip Carrigan sang to General Marquis de Lafayette during his visit to New Hampshire in 1825, and an account book that details the cloth trade in Calcutta, India from 1813 to 1815
