About the Drake-Aldrich Family (1842-1995)

Frank James Drake (November 3 1842 - Aug. 20 1891) was the son of James Drake and Betsey Seavey of Drake Farm in Pittsfield, N.H. He attended Dartmouth College and on June 7, 1869 married Harriet C.E. Parker and they lived to Manchester, N.H. They bore two children, Helen (“Nellie” in the letters to her father) Parker Drake, born on April 8, 1871, and James, who died in infancy. After the death of James, Harriet left Frank and moved to Europe and he raised his daughter alone. Frank ran a flour and grain business with Frank P. Carpenter, Drake & Carpenter, on Granite Street in Manchester. This later became a wholesale dealership in flour, grain, and staple groceries, as well as lime and cement, Drake & Dodge (his partner was then Roger Dodge). In February 1885 Frank was in an accident while on his way to New Orleans and was hospitalized in Cincinnati, Ohio for three months. Subsequent to this, he suffered from back and leg problems. He died at the age of 50 from appendicitis.

Frank’s brother, Nathaniel Seavey Drake (Sept. 16, 1851 - Dec. 28, 1936) was also born in Pittsfield. He took an active interest in town affairs and served variously as town moderator, treasurer, auditor, school board member, and member of a number of different committees. He served in the state legislature as a Democrat in the House of Representatives in 1910 and the Senate in 1914. With his older sister, Georgiana Butters Drake, he gave the Drake Athletic Field to the town in 1917. He was superintendent of the C.B. Lancaster Shoe Company factories located in Pittsfield and Barnstead until the business moved to Keene, N.H. After their removal, he opened a shoe manufacturing company, Hill & Drake Shoe Co., and later the Drake & Sanborn Shoe Co. and ran a clothing store, N.S. Drake. He married Mary Agnes Rogers Green on March 17, 1872 and they had two children, James Frank Drake, born Sept. 1, 1880, and Agnes, born April 2, 1883.

Frank’s daughter Helen Parker Drake (d. 1995, Sarasota Florida), attended Wellesley College and married Charles Spaulding Aldrich sometime around 1898. They had a daughter, Adeline Aldrich, born on Dec 10, 1901 in Troy, New York. Adeline married Clarence Scott.

About the Drake-Aldrich Family Papers (1868-1949)

The Drake-Aldrich family papers span the years 1868 to 1949 and are primarily comprised of correspondence between family members (mostly to Frank J. Drake and to his daughter Helen Parker Drake Aldrich and her husband Charles Spaulding Aldrich). There are also two scrapbooks, seventy-six photographs and a small amount of miscellaneous material, including approximately sixty bills. The correspondence includes 653 letters written to Frank J. Drake, 400 of them from his younger brother, Nathaniel Drake, and 148 from his daughter, Helen Parker Drake Aldrich (“Nellie”). Helen herself was the recipient of 369 letters, both before and after her marriage, 111 of them from her husband, Charles Aldrich and 68 from her daughter Adeline. There are also thirteen letters to her from Emile Mayauden, a young Belgian soldier who often titles her his “war mother.” In his turn, Charles received 72 letters from Helen and 26 from his daughter Adeline.
