As a member of the Boston Library Consortium (BLC), the University of New Hampshire Library is participating in the Internet Archive's Open Content Alliance (OCA) mass book digitization project (read the BLC News release).
From the OCA FAQ page: "The Open Content Alliance (OCA) represents the collaborative efforts of a group of cultural, technology, nonprofit, and governmental organizations from around the world that will help build a permanent archive of multilingual digitized text and multimedia content. The OCA was conceived by the Internet Archive and Yahoo! in early 2005 as a way to offer broad, public access to a rich panorama of world culture."
In 2008 the University Library will send approximately 2,000 volumes from its collections to the OCA's Northeast Regional Scanning Center located at the Boston Public Library. The books will be scanned on specially designed equipment using a non-destructive process. Within days of a book being shipped to Boston, the digital version will be available on the Internet Archive Website. Digitized UNH books will eventually also be available through the Library Catalog and in the Digital Collections Initiative Database. After scanning, books will be returned to the University Library shelves.

Members of the University of New Hampshire community are encouraged to nominate books for inclusion in this project. Please send your suggestions to Eleta Exline, Digital Collections Librarian. Nominated books will be screened using the Library's OCA Submission Criteria.
