Gift Policy
General Acquisitions Policies: Gifts in Kind
The Library welcomes donations of money, books, relevant journals, and other appropriate material. Especially valuable gifts are books, journals, videos, dvds, and compact discs that fill existing gaps in our collection and support the curriculum. We evaluate gift materials by the same standards as purchased materials; while we accept most books as donations, we add only those which are appropriate for the collection. We request that donors submit a list of possible periodical donations, including the years covered.
Because of space limitations and processing costs, we do not add many gift items to our collection, including:
- Duplicate titles
- Previous editions
- Material that does not support our academic mission, items in poor physical condition, and textbooks---especially those more than 1-2 years old---are rarely added.
- Periodical runs of no fewer than ten years of titles that we do not already own in any format and only if they support the curriculum
The UNH Library reserves the right to accept or decline any gift. Gift-in-kind are accepted only with the understanding that once received they are wholly owned by the University. The UNH Library will use, keep, or appropriately dispose of gifts-in-kind at its discretion. In this regard, the UNH Library will not return unselected items to donors.
Library gifts may qualify for an income tax deduction; please consult our tax information page for further information (link to IRS Forms 8282;8283). The Library, as an interested party, cannot place a monetary value on any gift; a professional book appraiser must evaluate the gift if its value is over $5,000. The appraisal is the responsibility of the donor since it is the donor who benefits from the tax deduction. Donors can use such reference tools as Books in Print to determine the fair market value of their donation. A useful on-line source for out-of-print book prices is Bookfinder.com .
Included as donors are UNH faculty and administrators who have purchased information resources with internal or external funds and donate these materials to the Library to provide for university-wide awareness and use. We evaluate such extralibrary collections by the same criteria as other gifts.
We always send a letter to donors acknowledging the gift and the number of items donated. However, because of limited staff time, the Library cannot provide an itemized list of contributions.
