Chem 400
Information discussion: Web I

I.  Information sources
II.  Choosing and using the World Wide Web

        A.  What is the Web?
        B.  Search engines, see list compiled by UNH reference librarians
Examples: Google (often the most effective); Dogpile (searches across multiple search engines). Lots more info at Search Engine Showdown.
        C.  Directories (examples: Yahoo, Google, LII)
        * Who researches and compiles web pages for Google's directory?
        * Yahoo?
        * And the non-commercial directory, Librarians' Index to the Internet? (http://lii.org)
        D. Keep track of your search (Notepad)
        E. Give credit: cite your source and use quotes if you quote.
For chemistry, use the ACS Style Guide, available on reserve at the Chemistry Library.
For other fields, use recommended style or a guide such as Electronic Styles.      For example:
UNH Chemistry Branch Library. http://www.library.unh.edu/branches/chemgide.html (accessed Feb. 2002).

III.  What's true on the Internet? IV.  Be critical: evaluating your source

Good guides:  Evaluating Web Sites for Quality from the UNH Library's Reference Dept. and much more info at Evaluating Web Resources)
Points to consider:
        Accuracy
        Bias and Content: some thoughts...
Who stands to profit?  Page creators?   Companies listed in the directory?
        Documentation and Editorial Control
Who is responsible for this site?
           And this one?
        Gut Feeling
           Examples: Are they for real?

V.  If you're wondering whether you're on the right path, ask for directions! Professors and library staff can help you. Come visit the Chemistry Library in the Iddles Wing.
